Talented Youngster Leon Ruan Recalled by Leeds Rhinos Amid Injury Crisis

Talented Youngster Leon Ruan Returns to Leeds Rhinos Amidst Injury Crisis

In a strategic move to bolster their squad during an injury crisis, Leeds Rhinos have recalled young forward Leon Ruan from his short-term loan with Doncaster RLFC. The 20-year-old, who was signed on a full-time contract at Headingley ahead of the 2023 season, had made a single appearance for Doncaster in a derby against Sheffield Eagles before suffering an injury in training with the Rhinos.

Ruan, who came through the Wakefield academy ranks, made a strong impression during his time with Doncaster in 2022, scoring a try in a pivotal 52-20 win that sent the Dons to the promotion final. His performances earned him a nomination for the League One Young Player of the Season award.

“Bringing Leon back was an easy decision, we know him as a person already from his previous time with us, as well as the quality he will add to the squad.”

However, the young forward’s loan spell in South Yorkshire was cut short by the injury, and he now has the opportunity to potentially make his mark in the Super League with the Rhinos.

The Rhinos are currently facing an injury crisis, with two forwards, James Bentley and Tom Holroyd, ruled out of their upcoming game against Huddersfield Giants on Friday. Ruan’s recall comes at a crucial time, and he may be in line to make his second appearance of the season against Wakefield Trinity.

This move is part of a wider trend of Super League teams sending young players on short-term loan deals to lower-division clubs, with Leigh Leopards and Bradford Bulls also having utilized this strategy recently. Doncaster, in particular, have been active in this area, bringing in rising stars to aid their campaign.

As Leeds Rhinos navigate their injury woes, the return of Leon Ruan will be a welcome boost for head coach Rohan Smith, who will be hoping the young forward can make an immediate impact and help his side secure a crucial victory against Huddersfield Giants.
