Excitement Builds for Thrilling Challenge Cup Semi-Finals
The eagerly anticipated Challenge Cup semi-finals are upon us, with seven clubs set to battle it out across two double-header weekends. In our latest Squad Watch feature, we bring you all the essential team news ahead of this weekend’s crunch fixtures.
On Saturday, May 18, the action kicks off at the Eco-Power Stadium in Doncaster. First up, St Helens’ women’s team, the defending champions, host York Valkyrie in a rematch of last year’s semi-final. Saints will be aiming to secure a second consecutive trip to Wembley, having claimed the trophy for the third successive season in 2023. However, York managed to defeat the Red V earlier this year in the Women’s Super League, with former Saint Carrie Roberts scoring the decisive try.
The men’s semi-final at the same venue sees Hull KR take on Wigan Warriors. KR boss Willie Peters has made two changes to his squad, with recent recruits Jack Brown and Jack Broadbent cup-tied, replaced by youngsters Reiss Butterworth and Louix Gorman. Notably, captain Elliot Minchella returns after missing the previous round through injury. Wigan, on the other hand, have just one enforced change, with the suspended Liam Byrne making way for Ryan Hampshire.
On Sunday, May 19, the action shifts to the Totally Wicked Stadium in St Helens. The women’s semi-final sees Wigan Warriors face off against Leeds Rhinos, with both squads yet to be confirmed.
The final match of the weekend features Warrington Wolves hosting Huddersfield Giants, with the squad details for both sides still to be announced.
“As the race for Challenge Cup glory intensifies, the stage is set for a thrilling weekend of rugby league action.”
