Rugby League Fans Eagerly Await Wembley Visits
Wembley Stadium holds a special place in the hearts of rugby league enthusiasts, as the annual Challenge Cup final is often the highlight of the season for many loyal supporters. While Super League clubs regularly grace the iconic venue, the opportunity for Championship and League 1 teams to experience the thrill of playing at the national stadium is a rarer occurrence.
The recent introduction of the 1895 Cup has provided a few more teams the chance to walk down Wembley Way, with Sheffield Eagles and Wakefield Trinity set to join Super League outfits Wigan Warriors, Hull KR, Warrington Wolves, and Huddersfield Giants in the showpiece event on June 8th. For some Trinity fans, this will be a new experience, while others may have witnessed their team at the ‘old’ Wembley in the past.
Delving into the records, it becomes apparent that 10 clubs currently competing in the top three tiers of British rugby league are yet to grace the hallowed Wembley turf. This list includes Cornwall, Doncaster, Midlands Hurricanes, Newcastle Thunder, North Wales Crusaders, Oldham, Rochdale Hornets, Swinton Lions, Toulouse Olympique, and Whitehaven.
The reasons vary, from newly formed clubs like Cornwall to teams that have historically found success, but have missed out on the Wembley experience. Oldham and Rochdale Hornets, for instance, have lifted the Challenge Cup in the past, but their triumphs came before the final was permanently moved to Wembley.
