Wakefield Trinity Sign Playmaker Olly Russell for 2025 Season: Super League Return Imminent

Wakefield Trinity Secure Playmaker Olly Russell for 2025 Season

Wakefield Trinity, the current Championship leaders, have announced the signing of Huddersfield Giants halfback Olly Russell on a four-year deal until the end of the 2028 season. This latest recruitment bolsters Trinity’s roster as they prepare for a return to the Super League, having suffered relegation in 2023.

Despite a dismal start to the previous campaign, recording 14 consecutive losses, it was ultimately Wakefield’s two defeats to local rivals Castleford Tigers that sealed their fate at the bottom of Super League. However, under new ownership and with a renewed sense of ambition, the club has undergone a remarkable turnaround.

Strategic Signings and Ambition

Earlier this year, Trinity made significant moves by securing the services of England internationals Tom Johnstone and Mike McMeeken from the Catalans Dragons on four-year contracts. This week, they also confirmed the signing of Cam Scott from Hull FC, further strengthening their squad.

The acquisition of Olly Russell represents another statement of intent from Wakefield Trinity as they aim to secure their place in the top flight through the IMG grading system. The club has invested heavily in stadium development and attracted impressive attendances, all while winning the 1895 Cup, bolstering their points tally.

“I’m really excited about joining Wakefield Trinity for at least the next four years and hopefully beyond. I feel certain it’s the best place for me to keep improving my game and developing my knowledge to another level under Daryl and the rest of the coaching staff.”

Head Coach Daryl Powell echoed the sentiments, describing Russell as a “quality halfback” with immense potential, and believes he will be a crucial addition in Wakefield’s quest for success.

With these strategic signings and their current position atop the Championship, Wakefield Trinity are poised to make a formidable return to Super League in 2025, with Olly Russell set to play a pivotal role in their ambitions.
