Veteran Forward Matty Ashurst Joins Newly-Promoted Oldham on Two-Year Deal
Oldham, the newly-promoted Championship outfit, have announced the signing of experienced forward Matty Ashurst. The 35-year-old has joined the Roughyeds on a two-year contract following his departure from Wakefield Trinity.
Ashurst spent nearly a decade at Belle Vue, making 230 appearances for Wakefield Trinity since joining them in 2015. He is now Wakefield’s second-highest appearance maker, having been a key part of their championship-winning campaign last season, featuring 30 times across all competitions.
The Wigan-born center, who previously played for St Helens and Salford Red Devils, has now joined the League 1 champions, Oldham. Ashurst expressed his excitement about the “great challenge” ahead, as the club’s vision aligns with his ambitions.
“I’m really excited about the challenge ahead. The club’s vision and ambition align with my own, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.”
Oldham boss Sean Long, who previously worked with Ashurst at both St Helens and Salford, praised the veteran’s professionalism and leadership qualities. Long has already brought in several notable signings, including Iain Thornley, Gil Dudson, and Adam Milner, as the club looks to make an impact in the Championship and the 1895 Cup.
Ashurst is determined to help Oldham take the “first steps to getting to Super League in a few years’ time,” showcasing his commitment to the club’s long-term goals. The experienced forward’s arrival is a significant boost for the Roughyeds as they prepare for the upcoming season.
