Rugby League News: Bateman Not Joining Wakefield Trinity in 2025
John Bateman, the England international, will not be part of the Wakefield Trinity squad in 2025, Love Rugby League has been informed. Despite reports of increasing speculation surrounding Bateman’s future, the ambitious Championship club has no plans whatsoever to sign the player.
Bateman, who currently plays for Wests Tigers in the NRL, has been the subject of rumours suggesting that he could be one of the players offered to English clubs as the Tigers look to overhaul their first-team roster following another disappointing season. This had fueled speculation that Wakefield were interested in adding Bateman to their squad, alongside fellow England internationals Tom Johnstone and Mike McMeeken.
However, Love Rugby League has clearly stated that Wakefield Trinity will not be signing Bateman in 2025. The club has not been offered the opportunity to acquire the player, nor do they have any intentions to launch a bid for him, despite the substantial salary he would command if he were to return to England.
Bateman is currently earning around $600,000 (over £300,000) per year with Wests Tigers, a figure that would make him a marquee player for any club. Wakefield Trinity has already spent significantly to secure the services of Johnstone and McMeeken, and they have further recruitment plans in place should they be granted the opportunity to return to Super League next season.
Nonetheless, a move for Bateman is not on the cards for Wakefield Trinity at this time, despite the persistent rumors that had been circulating. Furthermore, it is understood that Bateman himself has no desire to return to England in the near future and is committed to making a success of his time with Wests Tigers.
The 30-year-old still has another year remaining on his contract with the Tigers, and it appears that he will be staying in the NRL for the foreseeable future.
