York Knights Bolster Squad with Former Hull FC Youngster Kieran Buchanan

In a significant move ahead of the 2025 season, the York Knights have secured the signing of former Hull FC youngster Kieran Buchanan from fellow Championship side Batley Bulldogs. The 25-year-old has penned a two-year deal with the Knights, further strengthening their squad for the upcoming campaign.

Buchanan, who hails from Hull, has spent the past four seasons with the Batley Bulldogs, where he has made a significant impact. During his time with the Bulldogs, the versatile back has scored an impressive 26 tries in 115 appearances, cementing his status as a reliable and productive player.

Through his Scottish heritage, Buchanan has also represented his country, earning four caps for Scotland, with three of those appearances coming during the 2022 Rugby League World Cup. This international experience will undoubtedly be a valuable asset as he makes the move to the LNER Community Stadium.

Prior to his stint with Batley, Buchanan came through the youth ranks at the MKM Stadium, making his first-team debut for Hull FC in 2019. He went on to feature in a further 12 first-team games for the Black and Whites before joining the Bulldogs ahead of the 2021 season.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Kieran,” said York Knights head coach Mark Applegarth. “He’s a player that’s played Championship for a number of years and he’s been there and done it all. I’m really happy to have a player of that sort of calibre joining us.”

Buchanan’s versatility, which allows him to play in the centre, back-row, or wing positions, will undoubtedly add depth and flexibility to the Knights’ roster. Applegarth is confident that Buchanan’s experience will also be invaluable in mentoring the younger members of the squad.

This signing follows the recent announcement of the Knights’ capture of former Castleford Tigers hooker Paul McShane, who has agreed to a two-year contract after announcing his retirement from professional rugby league. McShane’s addition represents a significant coup for the club, and he will be expected to provide leadership and expertise to the team.

As the Knights continue to build towards the 2025 season, the signings of Buchanan and McShane demonstrate the club’s ambition and commitment to strengthening their squad. With these experienced and talented players on board, York Knights fans can look forward to an exciting season ahead.
