Wigan Warriors’ Rising Star: Jack Farrimond Tipped for Bright Future
Wigan Warriors’ 18-year-old scrum-half Jack Farrimond is widely regarded as a player with immense potential, having progressed through the club’s renowned youth development system. The talented teenager made his senior debut in Wigan’s 60-22 victory at London Broncos earlier this season and could now be handed further opportunities to showcase his skills at the highest level.
Hailing from Leigh, Farrimond cut his teeth at the renowned amateur club Leigh Miners Rangers, starting to play rugby league at the age of five. His father, Tom, an ex-Leigh Miners player, has been a significant influence on his development. Wigan academy head coach John Duffy, who has known the Farrimond family for around 20 years, praised the youngster’s grounded nature and work ethic, stating that “Jack had an unbelievable first season in the academy last year. He absolutely killed it but he’s so grounded due to his family background and the influence of his mum and dad.”
Farrimond’s standout performances for the Wigan academy and reserves sides in 2023, which included 11 tries and 71 goals in 12 starts for the academy, saw him named the Academy Player of the Year and earn a promotion to the first-team squad. The goal-kicking playmaker was also selected for the Lancashire Academy squad and received a call-up to the England Academy squad, although he ultimately missed out on selection.
Farrimond’s Rugby League Abilities
Despite his diminutive stature, Farrimond’s rugby league ability is evident in his strong kicking game, vision, organisational skills, and handling prowess, which allow him to produce game-changing plays. Duffy lauded the teenager’s “unbelievable vision” and noted that his rugby intelligence is well ahead of his years.
With Wigan’s regular scrum-half Jai Field currently sidelined due to a hamstring injury, Farrimond may now have the opportunity to further demonstrate his potential at the first-team level. While he has not yet been sent out on loan or dual-registration to a Championship club, Duffy suggests that this could be a conversation to have in the near future, as the young playmaker continues to develop and challenge himself.
