In a recent appearance on the Sky Sports podcast “The Bench with Jenna and Jon,” Tomkins was asked to share his thoughts on something he would like to see less of in rugby league. The former England captain’s response was a call for an overhaul of the current substitution rules, suggesting that teams should be allowed to utilize their entire 32-man squad during matches.
“I can’t see the benefit in having four subs,” Tomkins said. “If you’ve got 32 players fit, get them all kitted up and let them sit in the stand.”
The rugby league expert’s reasoning was that this change could reduce the impact of injuries on the overall spectacle and outcome of matches.
Tomkins elaborated, “If you lose a halfback after two minutes, rather than a game getting lost or won and someone saying, ‘oh, but they lost two wingers in the first half’, bring someone else on.” The former fullback likened the concept to the “second string” approach seen in the NFL, where teams can seamlessly rotate fresh players onto the field as needed.
“We want the best product possible,” Tomkins stated. “To have that, you want fresh people on the field as much as you possibly can.”
