Salford Red Devils Prop Escapes Suspension, Two Super League Players Banned
Disciplinary Verdicts Following Super League Fixtures
In the aftermath of the weekend’s Super League fixtures, the Match Review Panel has handed down verdicts on several disciplinary cases, with mixed outcomes for the players involved.
Salford Red Devils prop King Vuniyayawa has avoided a suspension following an incident that led to his sending off during their victory over London Broncos. The MRP determined that Vuniyayawa was not solely responsible for the mechanics of the tackle, which saw the opposing player land on his neck and shoulder.
In contrast, two players from the Catalans Dragons have received bans. Michael McIlorum has been handed a two-match suspension for a trip and a dangerous contact charge, while teammate Mike McMeeken will miss one game due to a dangerous contact offence against Hull KR.
The only other player charged from that fixture was Hull KR’s Matty Storton, who received a £250 fine for a Grade B dangerous contact offence, given his previous good disciplinary record.
“This news will be a relief for Salford supporters, who faced an anxious wait to discover Vuniyayawa’s fate. The MRP’s assessment that he was not solely culpable for the dangerous tackle means the prop will be available for the Red Devils’ upcoming fixtures.”
The governing body’s decisions demonstrate the nuanced approach taken in reviewing such incidents, with mitigating factors playing a role in the final verdicts.
