2024 Super League Season Brings Major Officiating Changes

Speaking to an RFL media briefing, incoming referee’s chief Phil Bentham has revealed that the RFL is considering the introduction of the Captain’s Challenge system, a concept already familiar to regular NRL viewers. Under this system, the captain of each side would be able to challenge decisions made by the referee during a game, with each team allotted a single unsuccessful challenge per match.
“The Captain’s Challenge had not been adopted in the UK sooner due to the absence of video referees at every Super League game. He acknowledged that this disparity could have created an unfair situation, where a captain of a team playing in a game without a video referee would be unable to challenge a crucial decision. With the new televised format, Bentham believes the time is right to explore the implementation of the Captain’s Challenge in the Super League for the 2025 season.”
However, the Captain’s Challenge has not been universally accepted in Australia, with some critics arguing that it has been used tactically by teams in certain situations and has led to an increase in dissent towards referees. Bentham is working closely with his NRL counterparts to ensure that the system is applied correctly, aiming to avoid any potential issues that could arise from an international implementation.
