Leigh Leopards Expected to Retain Prolific Winger Josh Charnley for 2025 Season
In a boost to their 2025 prospects, the Leigh Leopards are poised to secure the services of veteran winger Josh Charnley for another season. The 32-year-old former England international, who joined the Leopards on loan last year before making the move permanent in 2023, has become a key figure in the team’s success.
Charnley, who is set to be one of over 20 players at the Leigh Sports Village with contracts expiring at the end of 2023, is now expected to re-sign with the Super League club for an additional year. The tattooed flyer has been in impressive form, averaging nearly a try per game for the Leythers this season, with three tries in six Super League appearances.
The Chorley-born winger first made his name at Wigan Warriors, where he scored 164 tries in 172 matches and was part of Grand Final-winning teams in 2010, 2013, and 2016, as well as Challenge Cup victories in 2011 and 2013. Charnley’s career also includes a stint in rugby union with Sale Sharks, before he returned to rugby league with Warrington in 2018, where he scored 69 tries in 108 matches.
Charnley’s impressive performances for the Leopards this season, which have seen him average 2.3 tackle busts, 102.8 metres, and 14.1 carries per game, have played a crucial role in the team’s success. Last year, he helped the Leopards reach the semi-finals and win the Challenge Cup in an extra-time thriller at Wembley against Hull KR.
The Leigh Leopards’ decision to retain Charnley for the 2025 season is a significant boost as they continue to build their squad and aim to build on their recent achievements.
