Leigh Leopards Owner Reveals Missed Opportunity, Best Signing in Candid Interview
In a revealing interview on the Leigh Leopards’ official YouTube channel, club owner Derek Beaumont shared insights into his tenure, including the “one that got away” and his best-ever signing.
Beaumont disclosed that the Leopards were close to securing the services of rugby league superstar Jarryd Hayne, who had attempted an NFL career and Olympic sevens bid before his recent incarceration. “Jarryd Hayne, the one that got away, that I was really looking forward to,” Beaumont lamented. “Everything was done, but a last-minute wedding derailed the deal.“
However, the owner was able to celebrate one of his proudest acquisitions – Fuifui Moimoi. The former Parramatta Eels forward joined the Leopards in 2015 ahead of their promotion to the Super League, with Beaumont describing it as a “minimum of three and a half times the salary of our highest paid player” at the time. “He was just phenomenal, and nobody could believe he’d come to the Championship, not Super League,” Beaumont enthused.
“It’s probably the only signing we’ve done where it’s never been leaked – it was locked in my drawer.”
This candid interview provides valuable insights for rugby league enthusiasts, highlighting the ups and downs of club ownership and the pursuit of top talent. Beaumont’s reflections on missed opportunities and transformative signings offer a glimpse into the inner workings of the Leigh Leopards organization.
