Rugby league enthusiasts were met with another war of words between Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont and Hull FC, as the outspoken Beaumont voiced his concerns over the Black and Whites’ operating methods this season.
Beaumont’s latest critique stems from Hull FC’s signing of John Asiata, with the Leigh boss accusing the club of “putting the cue in the rack” and prioritizing profitability over competitiveness. “Desperate people do desperate things,” Beaumont boldly stated, labeling Hull FC as “desperate” for their handling of the Asiata deal.
Doubling down on his apparent vendetta, the Leigh Leopards owner went on to argue that IMG’s new licensing system is flawed, suggesting that Hull FC’s focus on cutting costs and securing financial stability, rather than chasing on-field success, “is not sport” and “shouldn’t be rewarded.”
Beaumont revealed that he would demand Leigh be relegated to the Championship if they were to finish bottom of the Super League, reasoning that it would be morally unacceptable for the Leopards to remain in the top flight while London Broncos, who are fighting relegation, are relegated regardless of their final position.
The Leigh owner’s criticisms come amid a difficult season for Hull FC, who have released several players, including Tex Hoy and Nu Brown, in a bid to streamline their squad. Beaumont believes this move is indicative of a larger issue within the rugby league landscape, where financial considerations are taking priority over the spirit of competition.
As the debate continues to unfold, rugby league enthusiasts will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on the developments between these two outspoken personalities and their respective clubs.
