Leeds Rhinos Appoint Interim Coaching Team After Rohan Smith’s Departure
In the wake of Rohan Smith’s exit from the Leeds Rhinos, the club has appointed his assistant coaches, Chev Walker and Scott Grix, to lead the first-team on an interim basis.
The Rhinos confirmed on Wednesday that they had relieved Smith of his duties after just over two years in charge at AMT Headingley. His final game as head coach proved to be the disappointing 18-10 defeat at Hull FC last Saturday.
Coaching Change Ahead of Crucial Fixture
Despite sitting just two points shy of the playoffs, Leeds have opted to make a coaching change ahead of a crucial fixture against Leigh Leopards this Friday, with an international break looming.
“While the remainder of Smith’s coaching staff will remain in post at Headingley in the short term, the long-term plan beyond the international break remains unclear.”
Former Rhinos Players Take the Reins
Walker and Grix, both former Rhinos players, have been tasked with the responsibility of guiding the team through what will be an emotionally charged occasion on Friday. The club will be celebrating the life of their legendary player, Rob Burrow CBE.
This is not the first time a former Leeds star has taken up the reins on an interim basis while the club searches for their next head coach. Figures like Kevin Sinfield and Jamie Jones-Buchanan have fulfilled this role in recent years.
Now, Walker and ex-Wakefield Trinity and Huddersfield Giants fullback Grix will be the next to step up and lead the team. They will oversee the final training session before Friday’s game, before assuming the head coaching responsibilities 24 hours later as the Rhinos take the field.
