Warrington Reject Loan Enquiries for Veteran Halfback Drinkwater
(Sky Sports, 24 April 2023) – Warrington Wolves have reportedly turned down multiple loan requests for experienced halfback Josh Drinkwater. The 31-year-old has now confirmed he will be leaving the club at the end of the current season.
Drinkwater was a regular starter for the Wolves in a challenging 2023 campaign, but has struggled to cement his place in the side this year. Warrington coach Sam Burgess has preferred the combination of young talent Leon Hayes and England captain George Williams in the halves.
Despite his limited playing time this season, the Australian playmaker is expected to garner significant interest from rival clubs. Drinkwater enjoyed popular spells at London Broncos, Leigh Leopards, Catalans Dragons and Hull KR earlier in his career before joining the Wire.
Three potential destinations have emerged for the veteran halfback, both for the remainder of 2023 and potentially beyond.
Hull FC are undergoing a major rebuild following the departure of former coach Tony Smith. New director of rugby Richie Myler is tasked with reshaping the squad, and Drinkwater could be an astute signing to add experience to their youthful side.
Salford Red Devils have faced financial challenges leading to high-profile player exits. If star halfback Marc Sneyd departs at the end of the season, Drinkwater’s organisational skills and kicking game could make him an ideal replacement.
Promotion-chasing Wakefield Trinity are also rumoured to be monitoring Drinkwater’s situation. Head coach Daryl Powell knows the player well from their time together at Warrington, and the veteran’s experience could prove invaluable if Wakefield secure a Super League return.
“Warrington have turned down multiple loan requests for Josh Drinkwater, but the experienced halfback is expected to attract significant interest from rival clubs in the coming months.”
