Warrington Wolves coach Sam Burgess lavishes praise on in-form prop James Harrison
Warrington, 15 March 2024 – Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess has been effusive in his praise of prop forward James Harrison, highlighting the England international’s impressive start to the 2024 season.
Harrison has emerged as a vital figure in Burgess’ pack, stepping up in the absence of several key front-rowers. The 27-year-old has been an ever-present for the Wolves so far this year, with his performances earning the highest commendation from his coach.
“I can’t speak highly enough of Jimmy,” Burgess told Love Rugby League. “He’s one of the first names on the teamsheet every week. He’s in that group of players you can really depend on.”
The Warrington boss noted Harrison’s consistent displays and growing influence within the team, remarking on the prop’s unconventional physical stature yet “ferocious” style of play. Burgess also highlighted the player’s strong character and lineage, with his father Karl a former rugby league great.
“Above all else, he’s a quality bloke and is from great stock,” Burgess added. “Sometimes I look at him and I’m just not sure how he’s getting the job done, but he’s just relentless out there and he’s getting the rewards he deserves.”
Harrison’s journey to the top level has been unconventional, with the prop initially coming through the Huddersfield Giants’ academy before honing his craft in the Championship with Batley Bulldogs and Featherstone Rovers. Burgess believes this unorthodox path has been beneficial, instilling a strong work ethic and appreciation for the privilege of playing at the highest level.
“Often some players come the hard route through and generally get a longer, more successful career because they understand the hard work side of the game,” the Warrington coach explained. “Jimmy is a great example, not only for players who are probably not cracking it at 19, 20, 21, but for other pros around here that are working hard consistently to stay at it and make a career out of it.”
With Harrison’s impressive displays continuing to catch the eye, the prop will be hoping to cement his place in the England team ahead of this year’s Rugby League World Cup.
