Rugby League News: Featherstone Rovers Secure Promising Australian Playmaker Zach Herring
Featherstone Rovers, a club in the Championship competition, have bolstered their squad with the signing of Australian playmaker Zach Herring. The 23-year-old half-back, who can also play at hooker, joins Rovers from NRL outfit Newcastle Knights.
Herring spent the past 12 months with the Knights, featuring in their pre-season first-grade side and making 20 appearances for their New South Wales Cup team. Prior to his stint with the Knights, the young talent had come through the youth ranks of the St George Illawarra Dragons and accumulated 28 appearances in the NSW Cup.
“As soon as the chance came up to make the move to the UK with Featherstone, I jumped at it. It’s a massive opportunity for me and I can’t wait to get going.”
In total, Herring amassed 48 appearances in the second-grade competition in Australia, scoring 13 tries. Now, he embarks on a new challenge in the British game, joining Featherstone Rovers ahead of the 2025 season.
Herring’s signing is the latest in a series of new additions to the Rovers squad, with the club also securing the services of Carlos Tuimavave, Derrell Olpherts, and Toby Boothroyd this week.
Head Coach’s Praise
Head coach Brian Ford, who has been in charge of Featherstone Rovers for around 18 months, praised the signing, saying:
“At 23, we’re confident he (Herring) has plenty of development left in him and I’m excited to see him compete against the other half-back options for a starting spot. He has a quality running game and is a strong left-footed kicker, something that will bring more balance to our last tackle options.”
The addition of Zach Herring is expected to bolster Featherstone Rovers’ chances in the Championship competition as they aim to make a strong push for promotion in the 2025 season.
