Rochdale Hornets Secure Tom Spencer’s Return to Rugby League
Veteran Prop Joins League 1 Side on One-Year Deal
Rochdale, [Current Date] – In a significant move, Rochdale Hornets have announced the signing of veteran prop Tom Spencer on a one-year deal for the 2025 season. The ex-Leigh stalwart is coming out of retirement to join the League 1 side, bolstering their ranks with his wealth of experience.
The 34-year-old Spencer, who will turn 34 in January, last donned a shirt for Oldham in 2022, featuring 22 times that year. However, his most notable stint came during his time at Leigh, where he played 123 games for the now-Super League club.
“After recovering a bit mentally and physically since retiring, I’ve played a little bit socially in the amateur game and thought I might still have something to offer. I’m looking forward to scratching my itch and taking on an exciting new challenge. I can’t wait to get stuck in.”
A product of Wigan Warriors’ youth system, Spencer made four first-team appearances for the Cherry and Whites before first joining Leigh on loan in 2012 and then again in 2013. Over the course of his career, he has represented various clubs, including South Wales Scorpions, London Broncos, Swinton Lions, and Newcastle Thunder, making him a seasoned campaigner with over 200 appearances under his belt.
In addition to his playing role, Spencer will also take up a Strength & Conditioning position with the Hornets, further strengthening the club’s support staff.
Hornets head coach Gary Thornton expressed his delight at securing Spencer’s services, stating:
“Tom has returned to the game following a knee injury. He has had a terrific career to date at Super League and Championship level, and his experience speaks for itself. It will be good to have another tried and tested middle unit player who brings size and presence.”
This move by the Rochdale Hornets reinforces their commitment to strengthening their squad and bringing in experienced talent to bolster their chances in the upcoming rugby league season.
