Rugby League Enthusiasts Rejoice: Sheffield Eagles Sign Hooker Reiss Butterworth from Hull KR
In a significant move, the Championship outfit Sheffield Eagles have announced the signing of hooker Reiss Butterworth, following his departure from Super League Grand Finalists Hull KR. The 25-year-old, who will turn 26 next month, joins the Eagles after spending a solitary season at Craven Park, where he failed to feature at the first-team level for the Robins in 2024.
Instead, Butterworth spent time on loan and dual-registration, playing games in both the Championship and Super League, including three appearances for the London Broncos in the top flight. The former Dewsbury Rams and Bradford Bulls academy product has now made a permanent return to the Championship, where he will don the Sheffield Eagles jersey for the 2025 season.
The Eagles announced Butterworth’s signing on Sunday morning, posting a video on their X account to introduce their second new recruit for the upcoming campaign. With a wealth of experience across various clubs, including Batley Bulldogs, Workington Town, York, and Huddersfield Giants, the versatile hooker will bring a wealth of knowledge and skill to the Sheffield outfit.
“Butterworth’s career has been marked by his standout performances for Dewsbury Rams, where he made 77 of his 110 career appearances and scored 10 of his 13 tries. His prowess was recognized when he was crowned the League 1 Player of the Year in 2023 after helping the Rams secure promotion from the third tier.”
As the Sheffield Eagles embark on their 2025 campaign, the addition of Reiss Butterworth is sure to bolster their chances of success in the Championship, as they seek to challenge for the top spots and potentially earn promotion to the Super League.
