Ex-Super League Playmaker Strengthens Widnes Vikings’ 2025 Roster
In a significant cross-Championship move ahead of the 2025 season, former Super League half-back Dec Patton has joined the Widnes Vikings after parting ways with Featherstone Rovers. The 29-year-old, who came through the youth system of his hometown club Warrington Wolves and lifted the Challenge Cup with them in 2019, now returns to Cheshire to don the Widnes colors.
After making 106 appearances for the Wolves at the start of his career, Patton went on to feature in the top flight for Salford Red Devils in 2021 before dropping down to the Championship, where he has spent the last three seasons. Now, four years removed from his Warrington exit, the playmaker is back in the region, signing a deal for the 2025 campaign at the DCBL Stadium.
Patton, a two-time England Knights international who played for both Swinton Lions and Featherstone last term, expressed his excitement about the move, stating:
“I’m excited to be part of what is growing here and I’m happy to have the chance to play my part.”
The experienced half-back, who boasts 194 senior appearances including over 80 in Super League, is eager to bring his creativity and add to the existing talent within the Widnes squad.
Vikings head coach Allan Coleman lauded the acquisition, describing Patton as “one of the best halves in the competition” and highlighting his “extraordinary kicking game” as a valuable asset the club was in need of. The Widnes boss emphasized the importance of having quality and depth in the halves as they look to challenge at the top end of the table in 2025.
