Seasoned Rugby League Tactician Brian Smith Eyed for Parramatta Eels Top Job
Veteran rugby league coach Brian Smith is reportedly in the running to become the new head coach of the Parramatta Eels, eight years after his last Super League role.
Smith, who has over 30 years of experience in the sport, has an impressive coaching resume that spans across Australia and the UK. The 70-year-old has held head coaching positions with several prominent clubs, including Hull FC, Bradford Bulls, and Wakefield Trinity, though he is yet to capture a major trophy in his career.

The seasoned tactician also has strong family ties to the sport, being the brother of Tony Smith, who recently departed from his role at Hull FC, and the father of Rohan Smith, who was recently relieved of his duties with the Leeds Rhinos.
Now, Smith could be set for a remarkable return to the NRL, with reports suggesting he has joined the race to become the new head coach of the struggling Parramatta Eels. The Eels, who currently sit level on points with the Wests Tigers at the bottom of the NRL ladder, parted ways with long-serving coach Brad Arthur in May.
Smith’s potential appointment would mark a homecoming of sorts, as he previously served as the Eels’ head coach for a decade, overseeing 243 matches during his tenure. If successful in his bid, the veteran coach will be aiming to finally secure his first premiership title, having reached four grand finals in Australia without tasting ultimate success.
The Eels’ search for a new head coach has gained significant attention, with Smith competing against the likes of Josh Hannay, Jason Ryles, Trent Barrett, and Dean Young for the coveted position. Whoever emerges victorious will be tasked with reviving the Eels’ fortunes and guiding the club back to the upper echelons of the NRL.
