In the wake of Ian Blease’s move from Salford to become Leeds Rhinos’ new Sporting Director, the rugby league community has been abuzz with speculation about whether Salford head coach Paul Rowley might follow suit. However, Rowley has once again emphatically dismissed any suggestion that he could be on his way to Headingley.
Blease’s Appointment Sparks Rumors
Blease’s appointment at Leeds was confirmed just over a fortnight ago, leading to widespread rumors about Rowley potentially joining him at the Rhinos, especially after the recent dismissal of Leeds head coach Rohan Smith. Smith’s departure came despite the club being just outside the playoff positions, underscoring the Rhinos’ desire to find a replacement swiftly.
Rowley Denies Any Contact with Leeds
But in a recent interview on The Bench Podcast, Rowley made it clear that he has had no contact whatsoever with Leeds regarding a potential move. “It’s a hypothetical question, Jenna, because you could ask me that about any club in the country, so I’ve had no contact with Leeds Rhinos,” he stated.
When pressed further on whether he had spoken to Blease about the opportunity, Rowley responded dryly: “I’d speak to Ian Blease if I see him in the pub and he says ‘go get me a pint’ or something.” He reiterated that there had been “absolutely nothing” in terms of communication from the Leeds Rhinos.
Rowley Committed to Salford
Rowley’s commitment to Salford is hardly surprising given the impressive work he has done with the club. Despite losing key players like Brodie Croft, Andy Ackers, Ken Sio, and Joe Burgess in the offseason, Rowley has guided Salford to fifth place in the Super League table, including a memorable double over reigning champions St Helens.
The Salford boss attributes his continued motivation to the joy he derives from his players’ success, rather than his own. “I get more joy out of their success than my success,” Rowley explained. “It’s rewarding, it’s fulfilling, and I think as long as it’s fulfilling then you’re inspired and you want to work harder for them.”
With Rowley firmly focused on his role at Salford, the speculation surrounding a potential move to Leeds Rhinos appears to have been swiftly quashed.
