Rugby League Clubs Prep for 2025: Leigh Leopards Facing Roster Overhaul
As the 2025 Super League season approaches, Love Rugby League takes an in-depth look at each club’s recruitment and retention plans. Under the spotlight this time is the Leigh Leopards, who seem to be in the midst of a major squad transformation.
With a host of big-name departures, Adrian Lam’s side faces a changing of the guard at the Leigh Sports Village. Currently, the Leopards have just 16 players under contract for the upcoming campaign, leaving significant work to be done in the offseason.
Among the notable players leaving Leigh are John Asiata, Tom Amone, Zak Hardaker, Ed Chamberlain, and Oli Holmes, who are all heading to Hull FC. This exodus has opened up substantial salary cap space for the club to explore the market.
“One key addition is the signing of David Armstrong from the Newcastle Knights, who is expected to slot in at fullback next season. Additionally, Leigh have been linked with a move for Leeds Rhinos forward Rhyse Martin, indicating an aggressive recruitment strategy.”
Despite the squad upheaval, the Leopards still have three quota spots available, with Matt Moylan, Armstrong, Aaron Pene, and Edwin Ipape set to occupy those positions. This flexibility allows the club to explore the NRL talent pool in their efforts to rebuild the roster.
The primary areas of focus for Leigh appear to be the centres and the forward pack. With the futures of Ricky Leutele and Zak Hardaker uncertain, the Leopards will need to secure at least two established centres to bolster their backline. Additionally, the back-row and front-row positions require further depth and strength.
As the Leigh Leopards navigate the changing landscape, their 2025 lineup is beginning to take shape, with the likes of David Armstrong, Josh Charnley, Darnell McIntosh, and the Lam brothers set to form the core of the team. However, there is still a significant amount of work to be done to ensure the club is well-positioned for the upcoming Super League season.
