Rugby League Update: Saints Suffer Injury Blow, Lomax Eyes Early Return
St Helens have been dealt a setback with the news that forward Joe Batchelor will undergo ankle surgery, keeping him sidelined for at least the next eight weeks. However, there is better news on the injury front for stand-off Jonny Lomax, who could return to action sooner than expected.
Speaking to Love Rugby League, Saints head coach Paul Wellens confirmed that Batchelor sustained ligament damage during the team’s recent victory over Leeds Rhinos and will require an extended period of recovery following his surgery.
“Joe Batchelor is in plaster at the moment. He had his surgery last week and he’s going to be eight, nine weeks. It’s going to be a while for Joe,” Wellens said.
In contrast, Lomax, who also picked up an injury in the Leeds game, is expected to return after the upcoming international break, providing a significant boost to the Saints’ squad.
“With Jonny Lomax, he’s likely to come back after the international break which is a real boost for us,” Wellens added.
The Saints boss also addressed the situation surrounding young talent Jon Bennison, who has been the 18th man for the team in recent weeks. Wellens emphasized that the club has no plans to send Bennison out on loan, as they believe he is close to earning a spot in the first-team lineup.
“Jon has been out 18th man for a while and he’s likely to be the same at the weekend. I know he’s disappointed, and I want that from the players who are not playing. I want him involved in the squad. He’s too important of a player to be sending him anywhere right here, right now,” Wellens explained.
As St Helens navigate these injury concerns, they will be hoping to maintain their strong form in the upcoming matches, with the team currently sitting atop the Rugby League Super League table.
