Determined England Seek Revenge Against Samoa in Upcoming Rugby League Tests
In a highly anticipated move, the Rugby Football League has confirmed a two-Test series between England and Samoa, scheduled for October and November. This will mark the first time the nations have met since England’s heartbreaking loss to Samoa in the 2022 Rugby League World Cup semi-finals.
England head coach Shaun Wane expressed his delight at the opportunity to face Samoa once again, insisting his team is eager to set the record straight from their previous encounter.
“This is the positive news we’ve been waiting for,” Wane stated. “We face a tough challenge in France this month, and we’ll prepare for that, knowing we’ll have another crack at Samoa at the end of the season. That’s three big games to give us a focus for the rest of the year.”
The first Test will take place on October 27 at Wigan’s Brick Community Stadium, while the second match will be held on November 2 at Leeds’ AMT Headingley. Wane is thrilled to return to these familiar grounds, where England have enjoyed past successes, including their victory over Tonga last year at Headingley.
“Beating Tonga 3-0 last year was fantastic, and it’s great that we’re going back to Headingley where we completed that series. And personally, I’m very pleased that we’re playing the first game at Wigan. We’ve got great memories of our World Cup Quarter Final against Papua New Guinea, so let’s hope we can fill the ground again,” Wane said.
The England coach is well aware of the challenge that awaits his side, acknowledging Samoa’s status as a formidable opponent with some of the best players in the NRL. However, Wane is confident that his team is worthy of the support of their passionate fans and is determined to exact revenge for their World Cup semi-final heartbreak.
“Everyone knows how devastated we were to lose that World Cup Semi Final. I know all the players will be as keen as me to take on Samoa again. And I think it will be the same with our supporters. They know Samoa will be a top team, with some of the best players in the NRL. But they also know we have an England team worthy of their support,” Wane concluded.
