Major Changes Ahead for Catalans Dragons
As the 2023 Super League season draws to a close, the Catalans Dragons are bracing for a summer of substantial roster changes. With as many as 10 players out of contract at the end of 2024, the squad that takes the field in 2025 could look vastly different from the one that reached the Grand Final this year.
The club has already confirmed the departures of several key players. Tom Johnstone and Mike McMeeken will be joining Wakefield Trinity, while Jordan Abdull will leave the Dragons at the end of his loan spell, with a reported move to Hull FC in the works.
One of the most high-profile exits is that of England international Tom Davies. The club has officially announced that the prolific winger will depart Perpignan at the end of his current contract. Davies, who joined the Dragons in 2020, has been a crucial part of the team’s recent success, forming a formidable partnership with fellow winger Tom Johnstone.
“I’d like to thank everyone at the club for how they’ve treated me over the last five years,” said Davies. “Steve [McNamara] brought me over, and I’ll forever be grateful for that opportunity. Bernard Guasch, all the coaches, and my teammates have made this club special to me, and I’ve loved every second.”
With Davies’ exit now confirmed, the Dragons are expected to accelerate their plans to fill the void on the wing. Rumors suggest the club is interested in signing St Helens’ Tommy Makinson for 2025, as well as exploring the possibility of bringing in NRL wingers Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Daniel Tupou.
The Catalans’ recent run of poor form has seen them slip back from the leading pack in Super League, and the impending roster overhaul could be part of the club’s strategy to regain their position as one of the top contenders.
