Rugby League Star Mike McMeeken to Miss Extended Period Due to Injury
In a blow to the rugby league community, it has been confirmed that one of England’s most prominent players, Mike McMeeken, will be sidelined for the next few months due to a thumb injury. The Catalans Dragons have announced that McMeeken has sustained a fractured thumb and will be out of action for approximately 14 weeks.
McMeeken, who has been a standout second-rower in the competition for several years, has played a crucial role in both Castleford and Catalans’ recent success, coming close to securing the Grand Final triumph with both clubs. The news of his extended absence is undoubtedly a disappointment for fans and his teammates alike.
“While the injury is a significant setback, there is a glimmer of hope for McMeeken’s return. The 14-week timeline suggests he could potentially be available for the final games of the regular season, including matches against London Broncos and Hull FC, as well as any playoff games the Dragons may qualify for.”
In a separate development, it has been confirmed that McMeeken will be joining Wakefield Trinity from 2025, as previously reported by The Yorkshire Post. This move, which was described as a “statement of intent” by Wakefield owner Matt Ellis and coach Daryl Powell, who previously worked with McMeeken at Castleford, will see the experienced player take on a new challenge after his spell with the Catalans Dragons.
Alongside McMeeken, another player is making the move from Catalonia to Wakefield Trinity. Tom Johnstone, who enjoyed an excellent debut season with the Dragons, scoring 27 tries, will be returning to Wakefield Trinity, the club where he previously scored 87 tries in 115 league games.
