Castleford Tigers Overcome Salford’s Challenge, But Suffer Injury Blow Ahead of Rugby League Season
In a crucial rugby league matchup, the Castleford Tigers secured their first win of the Super League season last week, defeating the Salford Red Devils 36-24 in a thrilling encounter. However, the victory has come at a significant cost for the Tigers, as head coach Craig Lingard revealed that one of their new signings is set to miss the remainder of the rugby league season.
The Castleford Tigers staged a remarkable comeback, overcoming an eight-point deficit twice in the match played at The Jungle. Winger Innes Senior was the standout performer, scoring an impressive four tries to lead his team to victory. Senior, who joined the Tigers prior to the start of the rugby league season in a deal that saw Elliot Wallis move to the Huddersfield Giants, put on a display that showcased his exceptional skills and talent.
While the win and Senior’s breakout performance were positives for the Tigers, Lingard delivered some concerning news regarding another of Castleford’s new signings. The head coach revealed that ex-St Helens player Josh Simm, who had impressed early in the rugby league campaign, suffered a dislocated shoulder in the closing stages of the Salford game and is set to undergo surgery next week.
“Josh Simm dislocated his shoulder in the last couple of minutes and he’s had his scan and it’s unfortunately pretty much going to be a season-ending injury,” Lingard told BBC West Yorkshire Sport. “He’s in for an operation next week and it’s a five to six months turnaround on that one so there’s no point rushing him back for the last two or three games and letting him recover from that one.”
The Castleford Tigers’ injury crisis extends beyond Simm’s setback, with Lingard confirming that 13 players will miss the upcoming Challenge Cup tie with Wigan, and a further two are subject to late fitness checks. The head coach acknowledged the need to address the shortage of players, particularly in the outside back positions, highlighting the club’s efforts to navigate the challenging loan market.
“It’s imperative that we start getting some bodies in now, particularly outside backs because we’re struggling for numbers in outside backs now, so we’re moving people around into positions that it’s not their natural position,” Lingard said.
The Castleford Tigers’ injury woes come at a crucial stage of the rugby league season, and the club’s ability to navigate these challenges will be crucial in their quest for success. As rugby league fans eagerly follow the results and scores, the Tigers will be hoping to find solutions to their personnel issues and maintain their competitive edge in the coming weeks.
