Rugby League Round 12 Review: Brits Shine Down Under
As the NRL season reaches its midpoint, the performances of British players have once again grabbed the headlines. In the latest edition of our weekly “Brits Down Under” feature, we take a look at how some of England’s finest fared in Round 12.
Newcastle Knights had the bye this week, but there was no shortage of standout displays from their international contingent elsewhere. Max King was a dominant force for the Bulldogs in their 44-12 thrashing of the Dragons, running for 173 meters and making 27 tackles with an impressive 90% efficiency rate.
Over in the nation’s capital, Elliott Whitehead and Morgan Smithies battled hard for the Raiders in their 44-16 loss to the Roosters. Whitehead played the full 80 minutes, contributing 85 meters and 29 tackles, while Smithies made 67 meters and 23 tackles in his 55-minute shift.
It was a memorable outing for the Roosters’ English duo of Dom Young and Victor Radley. Young crossed for a try and made 137 meters with six tackle breaks, while Radley led all players with an astonishing 39 tackles to go with his try-scoring exploits.
In the battle of the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Parramatta Eels, prop Tom Burgess provided an impact off the bench, running for 58 meters and making 15 tackles as his side prevailed 42-26.
However, the performance of the round undoubtedly belonged to Herbie Farnworth. Despite the Dolphins’ narrow 24-20 defeat to the Warriors, the Lancashire native shone brightly, amassing 198 meters, three line breaks, and a try-scoring contribution – not to mention 13 tackle breaks, the most in the game.
As the NRL season enters its second half, the Brits continue to make their mark on the world’s premier rugby league competition. Fans of the sport in the UK will be eagerly following their countrymen’s exploits Down Under in the weeks to come.
