Huddersfield Giants Remain Winless at Home as Leigh Leopards Triumph
Huddersfield, May 24, 2024 – The Huddersfield Giants’ woes at their home ground, the John Smith’s Stadium, continued as they suffered a 16-10 defeat against the Leigh Leopards in Friday night’s Super League clash.
Ian Watson’s Giants had earlier this season enjoyed a resounding 50-6 victory over Hull FC in the Sixth Round of the Challenge Cup on home soil. However, they are yet to taste victory at their own stadium in the Super League this year.
In the Friday evening encounter, the hosts trailed 14-0 at the break after tries from Leopards winger Josh Charnley and his Papua New Guinean teammate Edwin Ipape, with Matt Moylan adding a penalty. Despite having a two-man advantage at the start of the second half due to yellow cards to Leigh’s Ed Chamberlain and Frankie Halton, the Giants could only muster a single try from Sam Hewitt in response.
“A stop-start game with numerous penalties saw Moylan extend Leigh’s lead to 12 points with two successful kicks. Kevin Naiqama scored a late try for the Giants, but they were unable to capitalize on their numerical advantage in the dying seconds, ultimately succumbing to a 16-10 defeat.”
The result leaves the Huddersfield Giants rooted to the bottom of the Super League ‘home table’, having failed to secure a single victory at the John Smith’s Stadium this season. They remain the only side in the top flight without a home win, and have now lost five games in a row across all competitions.
