Wigan Warriors Academy Continues to Breed Super League Talent

The Wigan Warriors academy remains one of the most productive talent pipelines in the country, consistently producing a steady stream of players ready for the rigors of Super League. This year, several Wigan youngsters have been loaned out to other clubs, gaining invaluable first-team experience to aid their development.

Wigan’s Formidable Forward Pack

The Warriors boast one of the strongest forward packs in the league, featuring some of the nation’s top talent. England internationals Tyler Dupree and Sam Walters joined the squad in 2023, further bolstering an already formidable pack. This depth, however, can make it challenging for fringe players to break into the 21-man matchday squad.

Loan Spells Provide Opportunities

One such player, back-rower Tiaki Chan, recently linked up with Hull FC on loan, with Wigan head coach Matt Peet expressing his admiration for Chan’s commitment during his time away. Similarly, academy product Sam Eseh has gained valuable game time with a loan spell at Castleford Tigers.

Harvey Makin’s Return and Progression

Now, another Wigan youngster has returned to the club following a temporary stint elsewhere. Forward Harvey Makin, who had been on loan at Barrow Raiders, has had his spell cut short to join the London Broncos for the remainder of the season. Wigan’s transition coach, John Duffy, believes this move will provide a crucial step up in Makin’s development as he aims to make his Super League debut for the Warriors.

Prior to this season, Makin has gained experience with London in the Championship and made five appearances for Barrow in 2023, including scoring a try on debut in the Challenge Cup for Oldham.

“As the Wigan Warriors continue to churn out talented rugby league players, the club will be eager to see if Makin can seize his opportunity and stake a claim for a regular spot in the Super League squad.”
