Wigan Warriors Sign Tiaki Chan, Loan Arrangement Remains Flexible
Wigan Warriors bolstered their squad in the offseason with the signing of Tiaki Chan from Catalans Dragons. The young talent enjoyed a breakout season in 2023, featuring 12 times as his team reached the Grand Final, though he did not play in the decisive match.
Since joining the Warriors, Chan has found first-team opportunities limited, making just three Super League appearances in the Cherry and White jersey this season. His loan move to Hull FC provides a chance for increased playing time, as he was immediately included in their squad for the recent defeat against London.
Wigan coach Matt Peet has now clarified the arrangement, stating there is no fixed deadline on Chan’s loan. The two clubs will assess the situation week-to-week to determine when the player will return across the Pennines.
“Tiaki is determined to commit himself to that group,” Peet said. “A real big credit to Tiaki for that.”
The rugby league specialist will be hoping to make an immediate impact as he joins Simon Grix’s Hull squad to face Castleford Tigers on Friday, with the Black and Whites aiming to bounce back from their defeat against London.
In a separate update, Peet also discussed the progress of another young Wigan player, Sam Eseh, who recently returned from a loan spell with Castleford Tigers. The coach revealed Eseh is now in contention to be part of the 21-man squad, a significant step in the player’s development.
Eseh joined the Warriors from Wakefield Trinity in the offseason, making 15 Super League appearances for the relegated side in 2023 and earning their young player of the year award.
