St Helens Facing Forwards Crisis as Key Injuries Bite
St Helens, one of the powerhouses of Super League, are currently facing a significant challenge in their forward pack. With a joint-top position in the league table, they have undoubtedly assembled one of the strongest squads in the competition. However, recent injury setbacks have left them shorthanded in the forwards.
Talismanic prop Alex Walmsley will miss several months after undergoing surgery on his knee, while long-term casualty Agnatius Paasi is only now nearing a return from a major ACL injury. These two significant absences have left the Saints’ forward line thin, and the coaching staff may need to explore the transfer market for reinforcements.
Speaking to the St Helens Star, Paul Wellens hinted that strengthening the pack could be a priority. > “Potentially, it is something we have to look at, and I am constantly in discussions with both Mike (Rush) and Eamonn (McManus) on where we can strengthen the squad. It’s an area which we could potentially look at moving forward.”
With Sione Mata’utia, Curtis Sironen, and George Delaney providing cover, the Saints may still find themselves in need of additional forward options to maintain their challenge at the top of the table. Three potential targets have emerged as potential solutions to their current predicament.
- George King, the Ireland international, has been a fixture in the Hull KR side, but with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, a short-term move to the Saints could benefit both the player and the club.
- Another option is Jack Brown, the 23-year-old prop from Hull FC, who has impressed despite his team’s struggles.
- Finally, the experienced Jarrod Wallace, currently plying his trade at the Dolphins, could be a target for the off-season, provided the Saints can free up a quota spot.
As St Helens navigate these injury concerns, their ability to adapt and strengthen their forward pack could prove crucial in their quest to retain their Super League crown.
