Wigan Warriors Winger Liam Marshall’s Remarkable Club Career and Elusive England Call-Up
Liam Marshall, the 27-year-old Wigan Warriors winger, has enjoyed a remarkable club career, playing a pivotal role in his team’s many trophy-winning triumphs. Despite his impressive form at the domestic level, the skilled winger has yet to cement his place in the England national team setup.
Marshall made his sole appearance for the national side in a warm-up match against Fiji ahead of the delayed 2021 Rugby League World Cup, but that outing did not count as an official test cap. As the Warriors ace approaches his 28th birthday, he remains determined to focus on his club commitments, stating that international recognition would be a “bonus” rather than a priority.

The skilled winger has been in scintillating form for Wigan so far this season, crossing the line 13 times in just eight games, including a four-try haul against Castleford Tigers in the Challenge Cup. His impressive performances have solidified his status as one of the premier wingers in the Super League, but the path to the England team has remained elusive.
England head coach Shaun Wane, who has strong ties with Wigan as the club’s “leadership and management director,” has favored other players such as Tommy Makinson and Matty Ashton in recent squads. However, Marshall maintains that he is well-versed in Wane’s expectations, having worked extensively with him at the Warriors, and remains focused on continuing his stellar club form.
As England prepare to take on France in a mid-season test match in Toulouse on June 29, Marshall’s chances of earning an official international debut may once again be limited, with the NRL-based stars typically unavailable for these fixtures. Nonetheless, the determined Wigan flyer remains unfazed, stating that his priority is to help his club achieve further success, with any additional international opportunities simply a “bonus” in his eyes.
