Wigan Warriors Boast Talent-Filled Roster, Key to Recent Success
Wigan Warriors’ squad is packed with talent, and their strength in depth has been a crucial factor in their recent success. With Harry Smith and Bevan French leading their half-back partnership, Wigan possess one of the strongest duos in Super League. Both players have been integral parts of Wigan’s trophy-winning squads, having secured Super League and World Club Challenge titles.
Smith and French have been locked down to long-term deals, with French signing a new four-year contract in April 2024 and Smith committing for five years in 2023. As a result, Ryan Hampshire has struggled to break into the first-team lineup. Hampshire returned to Wigan ahead of the 2023 season but has managed just six appearances since his return. However, he proved his quality over the weekend, scoring twice against Castleford Tigers.
“Wigan coach Matty Peet has reiterated that the player remains firmly in his plans for the 2024 season. Peet stated that he would only consider a short-term loan to help Hampshire maintain match fitness, as he is a valuable backup option across Wigan’s half-back and full-back positions.”
Wigan continue to challenge on multiple fronts this season, having won the prestigious World Club Challenge by defeating NRL champions Penrith Panthers in February. They currently sit third in Super League and have also reached the Challenge Cup semi-finals. Peet believes that effective squad management will be crucial in Wigan’s pursuit of silverware, and Hampshire’s role within the squad appears to be secure, barring exceptional circumstances.
