Wigan Warriors Cement Legacy with Iconic Stadium Appearances Worldwide
Wigan Warriors, the reigning Super League and world champions, have amassed an impressive list of prestigious stadium appearances over the years, cementing their status as one of rugby league’s most storied franchises. The latest addition to this legacy is Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, where the Warriors will face off against Warrington Wolves in a competitive fixture next March.
This is not the first time the Warriors have graced the world’s biggest and best stadia. Their history includes a 1989 exhibition match against Warrington at the County Stadium in Milwaukee, the first-ever rugby league game played in the United States. Fast forward to 2019, and Wigan were part of the historic Magic Weekend at Anfield in Liverpool, where they were defeated by Warrington.
The Warriors’ stadium resume boasts several other iconic venues, including the QEII Sports Centre in 1994, where they were crowned World Club Challenge champions, and Belmore Sports Ground in 1997, where they defeated the Canterbury Bulldogs. Wembley Stadium, whether the old or new version, has long been a fortress for Wigan, with their most recent triumph coming in last month’s Challenge Cup final against Warrington.
Wigan have also graced the hallowed turf of Murrayfield in Scotland, winning all three of their matches there between 2002 and 2010. The Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, however, has not been as kind to the Warriors, who have yet to record a victory in their four visits to the Welsh capital.
The Warriors’ global reach extends to Australia, where they have faced off against the mighty Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium in 2014 and played the first-ever Super League match outside of Europe against Hull FC in Wollongong in 2018. In 2019, Wigan made history by participating in the first-ever Super League fixture held at the iconic Nou Camp, home of FC Barcelona, where they were defeated by Catalans Dragons.
Most recently, Wigan added another prestigious stadium to their list, as they claimed the 2022 Challenge Cup title at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, further cementing their status as one of rugby league’s most successful and iconic franchises.
