Wayne Bennett Hints at Sam Burgess Reunion at South Sydney Rabbitohs
Wayne Bennett, the incoming head coach for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2025, has hinted at the possibility of a reunion with former player Sam Burgess. Bennett, who is currently the head coach of The Dolphins in the NRL, had his move to Souths confirmed on Tuesday after weeks of speculation surrounding his future.
Burgess, who is currently in his debut season as the head coach of Warrington Wolves, has already attracted the attention of the Australian media. The former Rabbitohs star had been touted as a potential successor to Jason Demetriou, the team’s previous head coach, with whom Burgess had a reported falling out.
“Sam is doing a great job at Warrington, and he needs that time and space over there to do that,” Bennett responded when asked about the possibility of Burgess returning to the Rabbitohs as part of his coaching staff. However, he didn’t rule out the possibility of a reunion, saying, “We’ll see what the future holds. He’s a damn good person.”
Despite the speculation, it seems unlikely that Burgess would leave Warrington Wolves mid-season, especially since he’s in his debut year as a head coach. Burgess has previously stated his commitment to his two-year deal with the Wolves, and the team is currently in a strong position in the Super League and progressing to the Challenge Cup final at Wembley next month.
While a move back to Australia may be appealing, with the allure of more money and the quality of the NRL, the door remains open for a potential reunion between Burgess and Bennett at the Rabbitohs in the future.
