Super League’s Warrington Wolves Eager to Showcase Talents in Potential Las Vegas Clash
Warrington Wolves’ head coach Sam Burgess has openly expressed the club’s strong desire to participate in a potential Super League game in Las Vegas, amid reports of a clash with Wigan Warriors being part of the NRL’s next American venture.
Burgess, a former NRL great who spent over a decade with the South Sydney Rabbitohs, believes the opportunity to expand the Wolves’ brand and showcase their talents on the world stage would be a welcomed one. The Australian elite broke new ground earlier this year by hosting a double-header event in Las Vegas, featuring the Rabbitohs, Manly Sea Eagles, Sydney Roosters, and Brisbane Broncos.
“The opportunity to expand the Wolves’ brand and showcase their talents on the world stage would be a welcomed one.”
Super League chief Rhodri Jones has indicated that the British competition is exploring ways to join the bandwagon and have its own sides participate in events such as the one in Vegas, as part of IMG’s efforts to help grow the sport globally.
Burgess, who represented England 25 times and Great Britain twice during his illustrious career, has already reached out to NRL chief Peter V’landys, expressing the Wolves’ eagerness to be a part of the potential Las Vegas showdown. While nothing has been officially confirmed, the belief is that the first Super League game in Vegas may involve this year’s Challenge Cup finalists, Wigan and Warrington.
The Wolves boss emphasized the need for proper marketing and promotion to ensure the success of such an event, drawing on the positive results of the recent NRL double-header in Vegas, which attracted a crowd of 40,746 despite poor weather conditions.
Burgess acknowledged the long-term approach the NRL is taking with its American expansion, and believes that if the first year’s performance is any indication, the Super League’s venture in Vegas could be “special by year five.”
