Warrington Wolves’ Matty Ashton Sets Sights on NRL Move
Warrington Wolves star Matty Ashton has revealed his ambition to take his talents to the NRL, the pinnacle of rugby league. This comes just days after his teammate, Matty Russell, secured a short-term loan move to Leeds Rhinos.
Ashton, who joined the Wolves in 2020 after impressing with Swinton Lions, where he scored 30 tries in 24 league appearances, has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting players in Super League. The 25-year-old, who has earned a place in the England squad, is known for his electric pace and ability to tear defences apart, primarily playing on the wing.
Speaking on The Bench Podcast with Jenna Brooks and Jon Wilkin, Ashton acknowledged that a potential move to the NRL is “definitely an ambition” for him and many other players.
“I think that’s the pinnacle of our sport down there, so if the opportunity ever did come up, I’d probably snap it up,” he said.
Ashton’s experience of living and playing in New South Wales for a year with the Mullumbimby Giants has only fueled his desire to potentially return to Australia. “When I went over, I lived by the golf course. That’d be a great place to go, live there,” he remarked.
While Ashton remains focused on his current role with Warrington, he didn’t rule out the possibility of joining one of Matty Russell’s former clubs, the Gold Coast Titans. “If the opportunity ever came up,” he said, “I’m playing for Warrington, that’s the main thing.”
Ashton has been in fine form for the Wolves, scoring in their Challenge Cup semi-final demolition of Huddersfield Giants and playing a key role in the team’s rise up the Super League table. Next up for Ashton and Warrington is a trip to Catalonia to take on the Catalans Dragons on Saturday at 5:30pm.
