Warrington Wolves Forward Matty Nicholson Eyes NRL Move in 2025

Warrington Wolves Forward Seeking NRL Move in 2025

According to reports from Down Under, Warrington Wolves forward Matty Nicholson has informed the Super League club of his desire to leave and join an NRL team in 2025. The 20-year-old, who has an Australian agent, is reportedly being courted by as many as five NRL clubs.

Nicholson has emerged as one of the brightest young talents in Super League, thriving under the leadership of Warrington’s head coach, Daryl Burgess, since the start of the season. His impressive performances have caught the attention of NRL clubs, with his manager, Liam Ayoub, reportedly being contacted by teams keen to sign the back-rower.

“Nicholson had previously turned down the opportunity to move to the NRL while at Wigan Warriors. However, his move to Warrington has paid off, and the club could now be set to receive a transfer fee for the player, who is widely regarded as having a huge future in the sport.”

Nicholson has already made his England debut, and the Halifax-born forward is expected to be in contention for Shaun Wane’s squads later this year, as England prepare for their 2024 plans.

The report specifically mentions Canberra Raiders as a potential destination for Nicholson, with the club looking to fill the gap that will be created by the retirement of another English player, Elliott Whitehead.

In recent years, a growing number of English players have made the move to Australia, with the likes of Kai Pearce-Paul, Will Pryce, and Morgan Smithies joining Newcastle Knights and Canberra Raiders in the last off-season. These players have already earned rave reviews for their performances in the NRL.

Additionally, Lewis Dodd is bound for South Sydney in 2025, with the Rabbitohs courting other English players, including George Delaney, although Love Rugby League recently revealed that St Helens were considering lodging a complaint with the NRL over an approach made to Delaney without their consent.

If the reports are to be believed, Warrington’s Matty Nicholson could be the next big English talent to make the switch to the NRL, joining the growing list of players seeking opportunities Down Under.
