Warrington Wolves’ Confidence in Holding on to Prop Paul Vaughan Amid NRL Interest

Warrington Wolves Confident of Retaining Key Prop Vaughan Amid NRL Interest

Warrington Wolves’ chief executive Karl Fitzpatrick has expressed confidence that the club will retain the services of influential prop Paul Vaughan for the 2024 season, despite reports linking the player with a potential move to the NRL’s Parramatta Eels.

Vaughan, who joined the Wolves from the Canterbury Bulldogs at the start of the 2023 campaign, has been a standout performer at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, quickly establishing himself as a crucial member of the squad. However, the 33-year-old’s impressive form has not gone unnoticed, with the Eels reportedly showing interest in acquiring his services.

“Paul is a very important player for Warrington Wolves and has 12 months left on his contract, so as things stand, he’s coming back here to play for us in 2024.”

Despite the speculation, Fitzpatrick maintained that there has been no direct contact from Parramatta regarding Vaughan, nor any indication from the player’s agent that he wishes to leave the club.

The Wolves’ squad for the upcoming season is largely complete, with the additions of Oli Leyland, Dan Russell, and Alfie Johnson bolstering their ranks. However, the club has also seen some notable departures, including Josh Drinkwater, Matty Nicholson, and the return of John Bateman to the Wests Tigers following the end of his loan spell.

Fitzpatrick acknowledged that the club has a limited amount of salary cap space remaining, but they will remain vigilant in their pursuit of any suitable opportunities that may arise.

“We have no quota spots left as things stand, although that could obviously change if someone left to free up a quota spot and cap space. However, I don’t envisage that happening.”
