Warrington Wolves Boss Praises Impressive Hull KR After Top-of-the-Table Defeat
Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess was quick to heap praise on Hull KR following their 22-4 victory over the Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Friday night. Burgess described the Robins’ performance as “brilliant,” acknowledging their dominance in all facets of the game.
“They controlled us everywhere, they ran harder than us and they tackled harder than us. It’s not a complex game really, and they did the basics a bit better than we did.”
Willie Peters’ side moved to the top of the Super League table with the convincing win, preventing the hosts from doing so in the process. The visitors built a 10-0 lead by halftime, and despite Matty Ashton’s try bringing the Wolves back within six points, second-half scores from Mikey Lewis and Peta Hiku sealed the two competition points for Hull KR.
Burgess acknowledged that his side went away from their structure in the second half as they tried to chase the game, but credited the pressure applied by Hull KR.
“The competition’s totally on. They showed us that tonight. We’ve got a bit of work to do, which is okay. We’ll review it properly and be honest with it. We weren’t far off, but when you’re playing a team that are as hungry as they were tonight… they made us pay.”
With the defeat, Warrington suffered their first loss in six games, dropping to third in the Super League table. In contrast, the Robins have now won four consecutive matches and sit top of the league on points difference over Wigan Warriors.
The Warrington boss’ classy words towards Hull KR’s performance underline the growing competitiveness of the Super League competition, with Peters’ side emerging as genuine contenders for the title.
