Rugby League News: Veteran Forward Martin Taupau Available for Transfer
According to reports, one of the NRL’s most consistent performers, Martin Taupau, will not have his contract extended by the Brisbane Broncos and is available for transfer in 2025. This news has put Super League clubs on high alert, as the experienced forward is reportedly keen on a move to the UK.
Taupau, who has played 245 NRL games since his debut in 2010, has scored 20 tries across spells with the Canterbury Bulldogs, Wests Tigers, Manly Sea Eagles, and the Brisbane Broncos. The New Zealand and Samoa international has persistently been linked with a move to Super League throughout his career, and his current £180,000-per-year salary is unlikely to deter interested clubs.
Potential Suitors in the Super League
As Taupau hits the market again, several Super League teams have emerged as potential suitors for the powerful forward’s services. The Leeds Rhinos, who have long been linked with Taupau, could finally secure his signature, with the departure of David Fusitu’a opening up a quota spot in their squad. The Leigh Leopards, who are set to lose several overseas forwards, could also be an attractive destination for the experienced Taupau, as they look to build a new-look pack.
Another club that could benefit from Taupau’s addition is the Castleford Tigers, who have been criticized for lacking power in their forward pack. With the 33-year-old Liam Watts unable to play the full 80 minutes anymore, the Tigers could see Taupau as the perfect addition to bolster their pack and provide much-needed go-forward.
