Rugby League News: Tom Burgess Reveals Rejected Super League Offers Before Joining Huddersfield Giants
Huddersfield Giants’ newest recruit, Tom Burgess, has disclosed that he had “serious offers” from multiple Super League clubs, including one from his brother Sam’s Warrington Wolves, before signing with the West Yorkshire outfit.
The England national team front-rower is set to return to the Super League competition after a 12-year career in the NRL. Earlier this year, he penned a two-year deal with the Giants.
Addressing the move, Burgess revealed that while Warrington had made a “serious offer,” the uncertainty surrounding his brother’s coaching future at the club ultimately led him to “do his own thing” and join Huddersfield instead.
“Everyone was wondering why I didn’t go play for Warrington because Sam is there and that was the obvious choice,” Burgess said. “I had serious offers from Warrington and Catalans but I had to do my own thing.”
The 32-year-old also acknowledged that while the pull of joining his brother was strong, his previous experiences playing at the John Smith’s Stadium, as well as the proximity to his hometown of Dewsbury, were factors that contributed to his decision to sign with the Giants.
“I’ve always tried to do that. When (twin brother) George went to Souths back in the day, everyone thought I should have gone then, but I stayed at Bradford,” Burgess explained. “You never know what Sam is going to do. I could have gone to Warrington, and he could have returned to Souths.”
Warrington head coach Sam Burgess has been linked with the top job at the South Sydney Rabbitohs, but he will remain at the Wire for at least another season. In his first year in charge, he guided the team to a Challenge Cup final and a Super League semi-final, and will be aiming for further success in 2025.
