Tom Amone’s Remarkable Rise with Leigh Leopards Praised by Head Coach Adrian Lam
The Leigh Leopards’ head coach Adrian Lam has lauded the phenomenal development of forward Tom Amone during his time with the club.
Amone, an Australia-born Tongan powerhouse, arrived at Leigh Sports Village ahead of the 2022 season after making 17 appearances in the NRL for South Sydney Rabbitohs and Wests Tigers. His uncle Asa also played for Halifax and Featherstone in the 1990s.
Initially used as an impact substitute by Lam, Amone has since blossomed into one of the leading props in Super League. Known for his exceptional work rate in attack and defence, as well as his skilled ball-playing ability, the 25-year-old has become an integral part of the Leopards’ pack.
Despite a foot injury limiting him to just four appearances so far this season, Amone is back to producing some of his best rugby. In the Leopards’ recent 30-2 victory over Catalans Dragons, Lam hailed Amone as the “best player on the field”, praising his mammoth display against the physical opposition.
“Tom has only been back for a couple of weeks now and has missed a lot of time, so it’s great that he’s finding his feet now,” Lam told Love Rugby League. “Hopefully, as a group and as a team, we will all follow in his footsteps.”
Amone’s rise has been remarkable, going from a bench player to a member of the 2022 Super League Dream Team, where he was selected alongside Warrington Wolves’ Paul Vaughan in the front-row.
“When he came to us he was a bench payer for us,” Lam explained. “So just instilling belief in him and making him understand his body and the talent that is in there – but also just not overthinking. I think his development in the last two and a half years has been phenomenal.”
With Amone now fully fit and back to his best, the Leigh Leopards will be hoping the powerful forward can continue to lead their charge in Super League.
