Concerning Incident Involving Police Officer and Referee at Sydney Roosters Match
On April 18th, a Sydney Roosters match at Allianz Stadium witnessed a concerning incident involving a police officer and former Super League referee Ashley Klein. According to reports, the off-duty officer, who has since been dismissed from the New South Wales Police, threw an object in the direction of Klein during the game. Fortunately, the match officials were unharmed, and an investigation was promptly launched.
Ashley Klein’s Illustrious Refereeing Career
Ashley Klein, an Australian referee, had an extensive career in the United Kingdom, officiating 150 Super League games between 2003 and 2008 before returning to Australia prior to the 2009 NRL season. Throughout his illustrious career, Klein has refereed prestigious events, including Challenge Cup finals and two World Cup finals, with his most recent involvement being the 2021 World Cup in England. He has also officiated the 2012 World Club Challenge match between Leeds Rhinos and Manly.
Additional Incident and Decisive Actions Taken
In a separate incident that occurred a week earlier at a Newcastle Knights game, a similar situation unfolded, but no action could be taken due to insufficient evidence. However, in the case of the Sydney Roosters match, the authorities have taken decisive measures. The probationary constable involved has been dismissed from the New South Wales Police, and both he and his father, who is also a police officer, have been banned from attending any events at Venues NSW grounds, which include the home stadiums of the Roosters, South Sydney Rabbitohs, and Parramatta Eels, as well as the Sydney Cricket Ground.
The NRL has also issued ban notices, prohibiting the two individuals from attending any games in the competition. These actions underscore the League’s commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for players, officials, and fans alike.
