Rugby League Transfer News: Priorities for Super League Retention
With the May 1st deadline now passed, the transfer activity in Super League is starting to pick up pace. The departure of John Asiata from Leigh Leopards to Hull FC is arguably the biggest confirmed deal so far. However, several of Super League’s biggest names are set to be out of contract at the end of the current season.
Last week, the full list of off-contract players at each club was revealed. Now, the top retention priorities for each Super League side have been identified.
Castleford Tigers
Australian half-back Tex Hoy has become an integral part of the team after a difficult spell with Hull FC. Head coach Craig Lingard recently acknowledged that Hoy is yet to decide whether he will remain in the UK beyond this season, making him a top priority for the Tigers to retain.
Catalans Dragons
There is a strong focus on homegrown French talent, with Alrix Da Costa emerging as a key figure in their spine alongside the likes of Arthur Mourgue and Theo Fages. The 26-year-old Da Costa, who is out of contract, should be the club’s top retention target, ahead of veteran hooker Michael McIlorum.
Huddersfield Giants
Tui Lolohea has been a standout performer for the Giants since joining the club in 2022, reuniting with coach Ian Watson. The Tongan international still has plenty to offer at 29 years old, and securing him to a longer-term deal would be a shrewd move for the much-improved Giants.
Hull FC
The emergence of young talents like Jack Brown has provided a glimmer of hope. With rumours of imminent investment at the club, they may be able to convince the 22-year-old to remain in West Hull, rather than move across the city to rivals KR.
Hull KR
Matty Storton has become a key figure in Willie Peters’ side, but the back-rower’s contract situation is uncertain, with Wakefield reportedly interested in securing his services.
Leeds Rhinos
Rhyse Martin has been a consistent bright spot. The Rhinos are reportedly close to agreeing a new deal to extend Martin’s stay at Headingley.
Leigh Leopards
Retaining the services of standout forward Tom Amone should be a top priority, with the player attracting interest from the NRL’s South Sydney Rabbitohs.
London Broncos
The London Broncos should aim to build their side around talented half-back Oliver Leyland, who has been a rare positive in a difficult campaign.
Salford Red Devils
Salford have secured the future of Marc Sneyd, allowing them to turn their attention to retaining hooker Amir Bourouh, who has impressed at the age of 23.
St Helens
St Helens will be keen to avoid losing a third homegrown product this off-season, with Jon Bennison emerging as an important player for the defending champions.
Warrington Wolves
The serious injury to Leon Hayes has highlighted the value of experienced campaigners like Stefan Ratchford, who could be offered a new deal despite decreased playing time.
Wigan Warriors
Wigan should prioritize retaining Mike Cooper, whose leadership and experience will be crucial for the club’s young and relatively inexperienced forward pack.
