Rugby League News: Surprise Leaders Emerge in Super League’s Man of Steel Race
The race for the prestigious Super League Steve Prescott Man of Steel award is heating up, with an unexpected name sitting atop the rankings halfway through the season. Following Round 13, the points for the coveted accolade have been dished out, and some surprise contenders have emerged.
In the top-of-the-table clash between St Helens and Catalans Dragons, it was the home side that prevailed 24-12, with Sione Mata’utia, Mark Percival, and Jack Welsby earning points for their standout performances.
Elsewhere, Huddersfield Giants snapped their five-game losing streak with a narrow victory over Hull FC, with their halves pairing of Adam Clune and Ben Reynolds receiving points, while Jake Bibby’s two-try display earned him a single point.
Despite a narrow defeat to Wigan Warriors, Warrington Wolves’ Sam Powell and Adam Holroyd were recognized for their efforts, while Bevan French’s impressive try assist saw him awarded two points for the victors.
Hull KR maintained their resurgent form, keeping Leigh Leopards scoreless, with Kelepi Tanginoa, Jez Litten, and Niall Evalds all earning points for the Robins.
In the Leeds Rhinos’ comfortable win over Castleford Tigers, Rhyse Martin’s brace of tries saw him awarded three points, followed by teammates Brodie Croft and Matt Frawley.
Salford Red Devils cruised to a 34-4 victory over London Broncos, with Marc Sneyd continuing his excellent Man of Steel campaign with three points, and Tim Lafai earning two points for his two-try performance. Hakim Miloudi of the Broncos took the final point.
The overall Man of Steel rankings now see Salford’s Marc Sneyd and Leigh Leopards’ Matt Moylan level at the top on 15 points each, with Hull KR’s Mikey Lewis, Warrington’s Matt Dufty, and Salford’s Nene Macdonald close behind.
