Super League Confirms Rearranged Fixture: Wigan Warriors vs. Leigh Leopards
In a move to accommodate Wigan Warriors’ participation in the World Club Challenge, Super League has officially announced the rescheduled fixture between the Warriors and Leigh Leopards. The match, originally slated for Round Two but postponed due to Wigan’s involvement in the global showdown, will now take place on Tuesday, August 6th.
Wigan Warriors hosted the Penrith Panthers on February 24th, emerging victorious in the esteemed World Club Challenge for the fifth time. This victory, however, meant that their scheduled Super League fixture against local rivals Leigh Leopards had to be postponed. With an international match against France and Wigan’s deep run in the Challenge Cup, finding an available weekend for the rearranged fixture proved challenging.
Similar to the situation in 2023 when St Helens missed their Round One match against Huddersfield Giants due to the World Club Challenge, Super League and the two clubs have determined that the Wigan-Leigh encounter will be played during the midweek period between Rounds 20 and 21. This decision ensures the completion of the Super League calendar in time for the playoffs.
The exclusive televised games for Sky Sports in August have also been announced, with the Wigan Warriors vs. Leigh Leopards match scheduled for Tuesday, August 6th. To accommodate the rearranged fixture, both teams will play their Round 20 matches on Thursday, August 1st, with Leigh visiting Castleford Tigers and Wigan hosting Huddersfield Giants.
This midweek fixture may not be the ideal solution for either side, but it is a necessary step to ensure the successful conclusion of the Super League season.
